Should you flip or rotate your mattress?
Sealy Posturepedic mattresses are designed with a single-sided construction – to maintain the condition of your mattress we recommend that you rotate your mattress 180 degrees on a regular basis. This will help to promote even wear and will extend the life of your mattress. In the first few months, we recommend that you rotate your mattress every two weeks. After that, a rotation every three months is ideal. Maintaining a regular rotation schedule will ensure even wear across the sleep surface and prolong the life of your mattress.
Why flipping isn’t recommended
Posturepedic mattresses are engineered with a specific layer structure to deliver optimal comfort and support. The upper layers consist of cushioning foams and quilted fibres, while the support system, made up of responsive coils, is positioned beneath. Flipping the mattress would compromise the support and comfort of the coils.
Which mattresses can be flipped?
Reversible mattresses, those with identical layers on both sides, are suitable for flipping. These types of mattresses may include certain foam models, though it varies by brand. Always refer to the manufacturer’s care instructions to check for the best maintenance recommendations.
How to rotate your Posturepedic mattress
Start by removing all bedding. Then, rotate the mattress 180 degrees clockwise while it remains on the base, if possible. This method avoids lifting and makes the process easier.
For safety, it’s best to have two people rotate the mattress. If your mattress has handles, use them only for positioning, not for lifting or carrying. Once rotated, realign the mattress with the base.
Recommended rotation schedule
Regular rotation helps distribute wear evenly across the mattress surface. A good rule of thumb is to rotate with the change of seasons or quarterly. In the early months, rotate more frequently:
- First 3 months – every 2 weeks
- After 3 months – every 3 months

Yes, you should aim to rotate your Posturepedic mattress once a fortnight for the first three months, and then once every three months thereafter.
You should avoid flipping a non-flip mattress, as they are not designed to be used on both sides. Often, the layers on the top are vastly different to the foams or springs at the bottom. Flipping may damage the mattress.
If your mattress features a pillow-top construction or a memory foam layer on the top, your mattress likely cannot be flipped. Otherwise, to tell if your mattress is reversible, check the care tag on your mattress or consult the manufacturer. Sealy Posturepedic mattresses are not designed to be flipped.
Almost all mattresses should be rotated in order to help the layers settle evenly. Not all mattresses can be flipped, however. Many mattresses are designed for use only on one side, such as memory foam mattresses or pillow-top constructions. Check the care tag on your mattress or consult the manufacturer.
